Yoga Mala

€19.00

The seminal treatise and guide to Ashtanga yoga by the master of this increasingly popular discipline

One of the great yoga figures of our time, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West more than thirty years ago. Based on flowing, energetic movement coordinated with the breath, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it have become the most widespread and influential styles practiced today.

Yoga Mala―a "garland of yoga"―is Jois's authoritative guide to Ashtanga. In it, he outlines the ethical principles and philosophy underlying the discipline, explains important terms and concepts, and guides the reader through Ashtanga's Sun Salutations and the subsequent primary sequence of forty-two asanas, or poses, precisely describing how to execute each position and what benefits each provides. It is a foundational work on yoga by a true master.

To coincide with publication of Guruji: A Portrait of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Through the Eyes of His Students by Guy Donahaye and Eddie Stern, this new edition of Yoga Mala includes a foreword by Jois's grandson Sharath Rangaswamy, currently co-director of the famous school Jois founded in Mysore, the Ashtanga Yoga Institute.

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, was an influential Indian yoga master who played a significant role in the development and popularization of the style of yoga known as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Jois began practicing yoga at the age of 12, influenced by the master Krishnamacharya, with whom he studied for many years. He honed his skills and knowledge over the years, eventually creating his own approach to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, a dynamic and vigorous form of yoga that emphasizes the synchronization of breath with a series of fluid postures.

In 1948, Jois established the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India, where he taught yoga for several decades, attracting students from around the world. His teaching was characterized by an emphasis on regular and disciplined practice, as well as a holistic approach to yoga, which included not only asanas (physical postures) but also pranayama (breath control) and dhyana (meditation).

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois was widely recognized as one of the most influential yoga masters of the 20th century and had a lasting impact on the spread of yoga worldwide. He passed away on May 18, 2009, at the age of 93, leaving behind a lasting legacy of practice and teachings for yoga practitioners around the world.
